Earthenware Studios is a welcoming community for clay enthusiasts of all experience levels. These policies exist to keep the studio safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone. By becoming a member or enrolling in a class, you agree to the following.

Community & Conduct

  • All members must have at least an “introduction to ceramics” level understanding of ceramics to become a member. Classes taken at other institutions definitely count.
  • Members are encouraged to say hello, share knowledge, and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive environment.
  • Treat all members, students, and staff with kindness and respect. Harassment or disrespectful behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • Do not disturb other members while they are working, use their tools, or touch their work or belongings without permission.
  • The studio reserves the right to revoke membership or class access for conduct violations. No refund will be issued.

Safety & Dust Control

  • Airborne clay dust is a health hazard. Never dry-sweep the studio — always use a damp sponge or mop.
  • Food and drink should be enjoyed away from clay work areas and equipment.
  • Report any equipment issues, accidents, or safety concerns to studio management immediately.

Cleanliness & Equipment Care

  • Clean your wheel, work surface, tools, and surrounding area before leaving. Leave the space as you found it — or better.
  • Rinse all community tools and return them to their designated location after use.
  • Wipe down the glaze station, wedging tables, and sink area with fresh water after use.
  • Clay water must go into the clay trap sink — never the regular drain.

Shelves, Storage & Work in Progress

  • Your shelf(s) is reserved for work in progress. Do not use another member’s shelf or disturb their work.
  • Bisqueware and finished work must be removed from shelves in a timely manner. The studio is not responsible for unclaimed work after 30 days.
  • Label all work clearly with your name/chop.
  • Ensure that your chop is up to date with the studio chop log.
  • The communal shelf is for short-term drying only. Unlabeled work on the communal shelf may be discarded after 7 days.

Firing Policies

  • All work submitted for firing is subject to inspection. Work deemed structurally unsafe or improperly prepared will be placed on the Revisions Needed shelf and does not count against your monthly allotment.
  • Glaze firing allotments are included per tier (see membership agreement). Additional firings are available at the studio member rate.
  • Use only Cone 6 clay and glazes unless prior written approval has been obtained. Incorrect temperature materials may damage kilns and other members’ work — you will be responsible for any resulting costs.
  • Firing schedules are set by studio management. The studio is not responsible for tracking individual pieces through the kiln.

Access & Hours

  • Earthenware members must book scheduled shifts through the studio management system. Stoneware members may use the studio between the hours of 9am–9pm. Porcelain members have 24-hour access.
  • Guests may use the studio only with a guest pass.
  • Do not allow unauthorized individuals into the studio.
